Original red cloth on boards with gilt lettering. The first known volume on the subject. Several page corners turned down. Early medical challenges were scurvy, which aboriginals treated with a potion brewed from ground hemlock or white spruce. The Acadians fared little better in spite of their varied diet of home-grown vegetables, meat, and dairy products. A few surgeons and physicians became established in connection with the arrival of the Loyalists. Leprosy and cholera spread. The first hospitals were formed, usually following various epidemics.
