White coloured paperback binding with silver coloured titles to the front panel and back strip. Plain text dustwrapper with black and white coloured titles to the front panel and black coloured titles to the back strip. "Charles Olson lived in Yerma, Yucatan, from December 1950 to July 1951, and this volume is a selection from his letters to Robert Creeley during this time. Few writers – from his master Herodotus down to Lawrence of Etruscan Places – have, in so short a text, so brilliantly united poetry, history and anthropology. His comments on fellow poets like Pound and Williams, and on the nature of criticism, make this book one of the master-text in the new American poetry." -- from front fold over panel blurb. Rubbing of the book edges and panels with sunning to the back strip, and lighter sunning to the front panel. Age toning of the text block edges with a small stain to the lower edge of the front panel. Chipping of the dustwrapper corners and top back strip edge. Rubbing of the dustwrapper edges and panels with sunning to the back strip. Stains to the verso of the dustwrapper – the back strip region. Remnants of a sticker to the lower right-hand corner of the front panel. First softcover edition. Size: 12mo (standard paperback). [4], 5 - 91, [5] pages,. All Four Corners Clipped. Scarce thus. From the collection of Douglas Calhoun, the editor of Anthanor journal, which published a special issued devoted to Creeley. Very good book because of a damp stain at lower left corner of cover, along spine. Very good dust jacket because some light wear to edges and corners. Presents well. These little Cape Editions are fun and handsome.

Description:
New York: The Divers Press, 1953. First Edition. Softcover. Wrappers worn with crude tape repairs to spine and some staining at the bottom with some pulling of the text block. Still Very Good. Original pictorial wrappers, one of approximately 600 copies. Edited by Robert Creeley. INSCRIBED and SIGNED on the front endpaper: "For Bill & Jeanette Snow/with affection & thanks/Charles Olson/December 1956." Charles Wilbert "Bill" Snow (1884 - 1977) was an American poet, educator, and politician who served as the 75th Governor of Connecticut. Snow introduced one of his students at Columbia University, Carl Van Doren, to the writings of Herman Melville, who was then mostly unknown. Van Doren was largely responsible for the national rediscovery of Melville, and of course Olson, with his first book CALL ME ISHMAEL, explored his own theories about Melville.
