In 1936 Tom Askwith set sail for Kenya, then a British colony, to begin a twenty-five year career in administration, starting out as a District Officer. He became Municipal Native Affairs Officer for Nairobi in 1946, before being promoted to a relatively new post of Commissioner for Community Development. After the outbreak of Mu Mau, he was given the additional responsibility of designing and running the Rehabilitation Programme for detainees,until he opposed the use of force against Mau Mau convicts who refused to work. Later, in 1959, eleven prisoners were beaten to death at Hola Camp, an event which provoked an international outcry. He retired to England in 1962. First Edition, NEW. CB4 . New. Paperback. 1st.
