About This Item

NY, Simon & Schuster, ©2009. Hard Cover. 416 p., [16] p. of plates, illus., plans; 25 cm. "Argues here that George H. Thomas was the greatest and most successful general of the Civil War. Because Thomas didn't live to write his memoirs, his reputation has been largely shaped by others, most notably Grant and Sherman, who, Bobrick says, diminished Thomas' successes in their favor in their own memoirs." A good biography. It points out that Sherman marching to the sea instead of destroying Hood was not a wise military decision. For an understanding of why Thomas was so effective, Thomas Buell's 'The Warrior Generals' (1997) is much better. Bobrick would have better spent pages quoting Thomas's admirers to showing how in many ways Thomas organized for war. ISBN (10): 0743290259. Stock#47178. Vg, nearly new/ dj vg.
