The Masses was an important and inflential radical magazine that was published in Greenwich Village from 1911 to 1917 when it was forced to shut down after a lengthy showdown with the government in which they stood trial accused of trying to "unlawfully and willfully…obstruct the recruiting and enlistment of the United States [military]". This issue contains articles on the Mexican Revolution and a profile of Victor L. Berger - "the first socialist congressman". Includes contributions by Thomas Seltzer, George Allen England, J. B. Larric, Eugene Wood, Ellis O. Jones, Hermann Sundermann, Carlo de Fornaro, W. J. Ghent, Edwin Björkman, Horatio Winslow, and Allan Updegrad. Illustrators include Art Young, Anton Otto Fischer, Horace Taylor, Frank Van Sloun, Carlo de Fornaro, Samuel Schwartz, and Marjorie Hood. Hinge reinforced with tape, light chipping, else very good.
