John F Renshaw & Company Limited.

Marzipan. [Trade Catalogue]

Mitcham, Surrey, England: John F Renshaw & Company Limited, [ca.1930].  First Edition.

Octavo (220x160mm) stiff card pictorial wraps, staplebound, yapp edges 49pp, 33 chromolithograph plates.

The wraps are slightly tired and lightly soiled; the yapp edges are a tifle worn and bruised with a small closed tear to the front fore-edge; the concealed staple binding is rusting (as usual); there are several contemporary handwritten industrial marzipan recipes/notes in ink and pencil to p1; elsewhere a few small signs of professional use; some pages lightly buckled at the bottom edge.  The full page chromolithographic plates and printer are not attributed. The excellent chromolithographic illustration is bright and clean.

Founded in 1898,  J F Renshaw established the factory at Mitcham (depicted on the cover) in 1924.  The trade catalogue provides a number of commercial scale recipes for cakes, biscuits, rout biscuits, macaroons, marzipan fancies etc. and an illustrated guide for commercial and professional bakers and pastry chefs as to how to use marzipan.

In 1950, J F Renshaw received a Royal Warrant to manufacture Marzipan (and other goods) and is today the only bakery ingredients company to hold a Royal Warrant.  Today, J F Renshaw is based in Liverpool.  It remains a leading British manufacturer of ready to roll icing, marzipan, frostings, caramel and mallows.

A second edition was published in hardcover in 1951.

A still bright elegant example of a fancy goods trade catalogue from the 1930s.

Nideggen mould-made paper, Fabriano Ingres paper (sky blue and rust), linen thread, and binder's board. Letterpress printed from metal types (14 pt. Walbaum). Bound as a hardcover pamphlet with fold-out pages. Design, printing, artwork, and text by Amy Pirkle. Amy Pirkle: "It seems as though every society, every culture, has a traditional bread associated with their cuisine. For Southerners, a true southern dinner includes homemade buttermilk biscuits on the side. As far back as I can remember, I knew that when I walked into my grandmother's kitchen in South Georgia, I'd find her in the kitchen with a hot batch of biscuits made from scratch. I printed this book as a tribute to her and to celebrate such simple pleasures as homemade biscuits at Sunday dinner with family.
