About This Item

MARY POPPINS, Reynal & Hitchcock, 1934, first American edition (8th printing), some rubbing and light wear to the spine extremities and fore edge corner tips, some tanning to the spine, pencil erasure to the dedication page, else a just about vg copy in the publishers oriinal pictorial cloth binding. SIGNED by the author in her hand in what appears to be a contemporary signature with the books publication. Most desirable thus. The first MARY POPPINS book of which we note no SIGNED or INSCRIBED copies offered in any of the major auction houses for the last 40 years! (As new facsimile dust-wrapper is available for a modest fee. Please inquire if interested. Thank you).

Synopsis

Written by P.L. Travers and illustrated by Mary Shepard, Mary Poppins tells the tale of a magical English nanny who pops into Number 17 Cherry Tree Lane to care for the Banks children, carried by her umbrella along the east wind. At the end of the story, after many fantastical adventures with their stern governess, Poppins ‘pops’ out again on the West wind. The first in this series of eight books, Mary Poppins was published in 1934, and the seven subsequent novels that followed were published all the way through 1988. In 1964 Disney made a movie composed out of the first four of the books of the series, starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. P.L. Travers wrote eight  books, as well as several other books for children and adults.  Her writing was not limited to novels, as she also served as a drama critic, travel essayist, reviewer and lecturer in her career. -

About THE FINE BOOKS COMPANY

The Fine Books Company, which began purchasing rare and collectible items in 1976 and selling same in 1979, is located everywhere a computer may be accessed. A 34 year member of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America and The International League of Antiquarian Booksellers, we have travelled to, purchased and sold books on, every continent ( save Antarctica as we are unaware of any commercial book activity there). Although we may be biased towards the fields of creativity, namely all genres of fiction in first edition, we have branched out to include many areas of non-fiction as well so that our stock of over 40,000 items, which includes books, periodicals, letters and manuscripts, is now more balanced than it has ever been before. We issue occasional virtual catalogues (which only reveal a small portion of our newest inventory), quickly reply to all inquiries, do appraisals upon request and somehow have managed to publish 18 books along the way. A "Heritage" member of AbeBooks as well, our specialty is service.
