Publisher's blindstamped red cloth, title in gilt on spine, corners and head of spine worn; text very clean. Second edition. Leared (1822-1878), an Irish physician and author, paints a rich picture of life in Morocco. The author explores culture, geography, people and religious practices of the country which, at the time, was a French protectorate ruled by the Alaouite dynasty, the current Morocco royal family. This travelogue gives an objective view from a European perspective about traveling through a country that was only just beginning to become a popular destination for foreigners. He discusses specific cities and areas, military power, agriculture and the natural history and sport of the country. Of particular interest is a description of drug use amongst the Moors.
