Richmond: Hogarth Press, 1919. Beige paper wraps with black lettering, stapled binding, pp. 10. Originally published in 1917 with a piece by Leonard Woolf as the first publication of The Hogarth Press in Richmond. This is the first separate printing, (although the cover states Second Edition). Just a hint of dust soiling to the covers, the staples are beginning to oxidize and there is a flattened crease to the corner of the upper panel, otherwise a remarkable copy, fine indeed. Kirkpatrick A2(b).. First Separate Edition. Soft Cover. Near Fine. Octavo.

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1922. Signed and Numbered First. Hardcover. Very Good with no dust jacket/No Dustjacket. From the signed, limited, numbered first printing, this is number 266, signed by the author at the limitation page opposite the full title. The pages are bright saving some toning around the deckled edges and quite clean except for a very few scattered spots of foxing; no owners' marks; the quarter cloth binding leans gently to the right but remains tight; the paper boards and paper title plate at the spine show some chipping around the edges, with a pressure mark at the bottom right front corner, a small inward turn and surface scuff at the top left rear corner, and some surface creasing at the corners and right edge of the title plate; some fading is also evident along the head edges of the paper and along the right rear, and the title plate is age-toned; nonetheless, a remarkably clean and attractive book, well-preserved. 459pp.; an extra copy of the title plate is tipped in at the… Read More

Wrappers a bit toned, two tiny creases to top fore edge corner. 1919 Stapled Binding. 10 pp. A short work by the feminist author and publisher known for Mrs. Dalloway, To the Lighthouse, A Room of One's Own, etc. She and her husband Leonard founded The Hogarth Press, and they were both members of The Bloomsbury Group, a literary society composed of numerous important intellectuals and writers of the time. St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Unable to write, Stevenson dictated thirty chapters of the novel to his stepdaughter as a diversion from his debilitating illness. He alternated dictating St. Ives and The Weir of Hermiston but gradually lost interest in the former. The plot concerns the adventures of the dashing Capitaine Jacques St. Ives, a Napoleonic soldier, after his capture by the British. Condition: Corners bumped and rubbed, shelf wear, hinges and spine heal moderately rubbed, previous owner's name on front end paper else a very good copy.

Common to this edition, the spine is quite sunned compared to the dark green half cloth, but gilt lettering remains bright. A pinpoint speck to the front cover's paper. The slipcase has minor wear to corners, the tail is bumped.; Sir Walter Scott's arguably best short story of the rough life of two cattle drivers in Scotland, privately printed in celebration of his bicentennial birthday. Copy 242 of an edition of 680 and signed on the colophon by Coleman O. Parsons who wrote an extensive Foreword for this edition. Frontispiece is a fanciful lion with spread claws, printed in red. The front pastedown bears a portrait of Scott, but I'm partial to the frontis, instead. Text block trimmed at the head edge. Printed by Meriden Gravure on Hale Paper's mould-made rag paper designed by F. T. Jackson and bearing a facsimile of Sir Walter Scott's signature of 1827. Bound by A.… Read More
