Salt Lake City, Utah: University of Utah Press, 1975. Hardbound . Reprint Edition. BINDING/CONDITION: mustard-tan cloth with black cloth at the spine; a Fine book, with a Very Good+ dust jacket. Includes a frontis portrait plate and a fold-out map. Originally published in 1957, this is a reprint edition. This was the second published volume of the diaries of Robert Eccleston. The first appeared under the title, Overland to California on the Southwestern Trial, 1849. Like many another in the gold rush, Robert Eccleston kept an excellent record of the journey to California only to break it off upon arrival. But after ten months, Eccleston returned to his diary; the narrative of this book is the record he kept of his experiences in the Southern mines during the years 1850 and 1851. The action takes place in the Mariposa mines and centers on a war provoked when the miners intruded upon the lands of the Indians. Eccleston was on hand when the war broke out, he joined the volunteer Mariposa Battalion and campaigned with it. While chasing the Indians the Battalion carried out some notable explorations: the Yosemite Valley, the Fresno Big Trees, and the High Sierra between the main forks of the Merced and San Joaquin rivers were discovered and made known. The Indians seldom came to grips with the military force; they either vanished before it, or agreed to leave their mountain homes and live on reservations. The war over, the volunteers were discharged in July, 1851. Of the two hundred-odd men enlisted in the Mariposa Battalion, Robert Eccleston is the only one known to have maintained a comprehensive record of any sort. This was the first full contemporary account of those events to be published. small 4to (about 10.5 inches tall) 168 pages. Appendix, bibliography, index. Orange endpapers.

Description:
Salt Lake City: University of Utah Press, 1957. First edition. One of 500 copies. 168 pp. with frontispiece portrait and fold-out map. Publisher's rust cloth with black spine label lettered in gilt, Very bright and clean. A miner who joined the volunteer Mariposa Battalion, Eccleston was the only one of some 200 men who kept a diary as whites pursued Indians through the High Sierra. "This brief diary gives an illuminating insight into life in the southern mines of California in 1850-1851. Robert Eccleston's journal tells the reader much more than merely what happened in an unimportant little 'war' between two hundred militiamen and some unhappy Indians. By close reading of this well-edited document one can gain a good understanding of the personalities, prejudices, and habits of the miners who made up the militia companies, and who were quite like and other California miners. One can also learn much about the physical hardships and dangers characteristic of the period and region" (R. Paul).
