Philadelphia: Carey, Matthew. unbound. Map. Engraving with outline hand coloring. Images measures 17.25 x 13.75 inches. Page measures 21.5 x 17.25 inches.

This elegant map of Brazil emphasizes the region's terrain and rivers as they fill the space encompassed by the eastern coast. A simple, hand-colored yellow line highlights the point where land meets sea, creating a visual rhythm that complements the stylized hachures indicating elevation. Important rivers, ports, cities, and surrounding states are labeled. The map appeared in Carey's "General Atlas" and is in good condition with wide margins as issues. Shows some foxing and staining. Some wear along center fold line, with two inch tear at bottom.Raised in a family of publishers and book sellers, Mathew Carey (1760--1839) became one of the most important figures of early American cartography. Carey was based in Philadelphia, where he owned a publishing firm and oversaw a cottage system of independent artists and craftsmen. His important "Atlas" was the first American-published atlas of the United States. Furthermore, the maps his firm produced represent some of the best quality and most informative depictions of the United States in the early period after it gained independence. This map is a wonderful example of his fine work.
