Mr. Beebe is requesting the subscribers (39) the sum of $5 per year for 3 years. Thomas Yates is listed as one of the printed names. Reference - In EARLY OWEGO by LeRoy Kingman, Hiram Beebe became editor of the Gazette in 1843 for 37 years. pages 549-550. In OUR COUNTY AND ITS PEOPLE by Kingman, Mr. Beebe did have some financial problems and removed to Westfield, MA until he was requested by "thirty prominent democrats of Owego" to return. pages 202-204. . Say, and other gentlemen of the party by Mr. James. This rather scarce set presents the account of the experiences of the Stephen H. Long expedition of 1819-1820, in which Long was sent to find the source of the Platte River in the Rocky Mountains. Lacks the separate accompanying oversize atlas which was issued in 1822 per Howes J.41, who remarks [the expedition was notable in that it supplemented] ". . .earlier discoveries of Pike and of Lewis and Clark, and pronouncing the plains region as nothing but a desert, incapable of cultivation!". --- In maroon half leather and marbled paper-covered boards with gilt-stamped spine titling, four raised bands to spines and marbled endpapers. --- A very nice set, with bright, mostly… Read More

Very good set of Catlin's classic account of his travels and sojourns with the Native American peoples from 1832-1839.Second edition with colour illustrations featuring 312 full-colour engravings on 180 plates (not the "400 Coloured Plates" described on the title page and spines). Includes three maps in colour.The illustrations show portraits of chiefs, warriors, medicine men and women, buffalo and horse hunts, rituals, religious ceremonies, dances, war games, sports, etc. The Native American peoples described include Choctaw, Blackfoot, Ojibwe, Comanche, Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara, Sioux, Seminole, etc. There are several self-portraits of Catlin (Frontispiece, Plates 62 and 132). First published in 1841 with uncoloured plates, it was published with coloured plates for the first time in 1876.
