About This Item

Alabama, 1829. Unbound. Very Good. Single sheet measuring 12" x 14". Creasing from folding, spotting, and a short tear thus very good. A handwritten inventory of the estate of David Harless of Madison County, Alabama in 1829. The list includes various farm animals, rifles, implements, and other household objects. Stamped on the bottom of the page is a woodcut seal of Madison County, Alabama featuring an eagle in the middle. The inventory was signed by Thomas Brandon, the clerk of the county. Brandon held this office beginning during Alabama's days as a territory and through 1832. According to Brewer's Alabama History, "Thomas and William Brandon, the builders of the city, had come here in 1810 with no property except their trowels and great skill in their trade, and from a straggling wooden village they made a city of stone and brick.
