About This Item
Washington, D.C.: Buell & Blanchard, 1853. . 8vo, dark navy-blue cloth, blind-stampped with only the minutest wear over corners, one corner bumped; some internal foxing Wright II, 12. Based on fact, Pereira, a British seaman was seized in Charleston harbor when he went ashore, His ship had made landfall there when threatened by a storm at sea. At root was a South Carolina statute that required the imprisonment of black seamen who came ashore or , if found to be former slaves, their return to that condition. The state's Statute was eventually found to be unconstitutional because it was in conflict with a treaty signed between the governments of the United States and Great Britain
