About This Item

Oxford: at the Clarendon Press, 1869.. Second edition, revised. 8vo. xviii, (2), 331, (1), 16 pp. Publisher's cloth, gilt lettered to the spine and blindstamped to the upper board, with a 10 line autograph letter signed from the author tipped in to the front of the volume with the address from the envelope also enclosed. Neatly rebacked, slight loss to the cloth at the head and foot of the spine, else a very good copy. Rogers (1823-1890) was an economist and radical politician. After studies at King's College, London and Magdelen College, Oxford he had a long and active career, at different times serving as Tooke Professor of Economic Science and Statistics at King's College and Drummond Professor of Political Economy at Oxford University. The first edition of this work appeared in 1868, this revised edition appeared a year later along with the first issue of his edition of Adam Smith's "Wealth of Nations". He was also a longstanding campaigner for the Liberal Party and was elected as member of Parliament for Southwark in 1880.
