London: The Sydenham Society, 1853. First English edition.

1853 FIRST ENGLISH EDITION OF ROMBERG'S LANDMARK TEXT ESTABLISHING THE DISCIPLINE OF NEUROLOGY.

Two 9 inches tall hardcover volumes, publisher's green cloth binding, expertly rebacked with original spine laid down, covers with blindstamped design and stamped gilt emblem of Sydenham Society, spines with gilt titles, new endpapers, Vol. I, xvi, 368 pp; Vol. II, viii, 450 pp. Corners bumped, light edgewear to covers, bindings tight, previous owner signatures to front endpapers, institutional library handstamps to title page of Vol II, text unmarked, very good.

MORITZ HEINRICH ROMBERG (1795 – 1873) was a Jewish physician from Berlin who published his classic textbook in sections between 1840 and 1846; Edward Henry Sieveking translated it into English in 1853. His nephew was Eduard Heinrich Henoch, who was known for describing Henoch–Schönlein purpura. He described what is now universally recognized as "Romberg's sign" in his original account of tabes dorsalis (a disease caused by syphilis damaging the back of the spinal cord). He related early symptoms as: "The feet feel numbed in standing, walking or lying down, and the patient has the sensation as if they were covered in fur; the resistance of the ground is not felt..." He was one of a tiny number of truly innovative neurologists in Europe who in the 1820-50 period introduced order and clinical observation and deduction into what was then an elementary discipline. He is credited with having been "the first clinical neurologist".

GARRISON-MORTON #4528. Lehrbuch der Nervenkrankheiten des Menschen. Bd. 1. Berlin: A. Duncker, 1846. Romberg inaugurated the modern era in the study of diseases of the nervous system. His Lehrbuch is the first formal treatise in this field. On p. 795 is to be found the original description of "Romberg's sign", pathognomonic of tabes dorsalis. English translation, 1853.

A Note From Fred Rogers: A child's first visit with a pediatrician usually comes soon after birth. It may be months or even years later, though, that a child first shows fear about going to see a doctor. The worry of an injection or some other unfamiliar medical procedure can trigger that fear. It can also appear because another family member may be feeling medical anxieties. And, of course, new body awareness and needs for privacy develop naturally in children's early years, so all these feelings can make it very hard for them to let doctors investigate the workings of… Read More
