Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott, 1862. Small Octavo. 118 pages, xxiv leaves of plates. This copy belonged to John N. Budlong (1837-1889) of the 8th Regiment of the New York Cavalry, Company G while stationed for the Union side at Falls Creek, Virginia. The National Republican newspaper of Washington, D.C., requested in 1883 for all officers and soldiers of the Army of the Potomac to send their names, regiment and corps along with their address to the paper for recognition of the stalward citizens of the nation's capitol. He listed himself as 8th, New York Cavalry, residing at 629 1/2 S.W., Washington, D.C. He later worked for the U.S. Agricultural Department and became a prominent member of the Masonic order as he served as head of the Columbia Commandery. He signed it with his name J Budlong, with numbers 335 of the NY Regiment at Falls Creek, Va (Feb? 17, 186[4?]. Item was further signed by his son John W. Budlong. It is rare to have contemporary manuals used in the Civil War by those who served in the 8th New York Cavalry that have survived in near fine condition, newly bound beautifully in full leather with marbled endpapers, all edges speckled brown.
