The Madrid Codices (6 Volumes)

by Leonardo, Da Vinci and Ladislao Reti

  • Used
New York: McGraw-Hill, 1974. Limited Edition. Quarto. In six volumes. The rediscovery of the lost manuscripts of Leonardo that had been lost since 1830, were rediscovered in 1967 and then researched, photographed and translated by Ladislao Reti who did not live to see them in print. Contains also glossary, index and bibliographic notes. McGraw-Hill produced a superb example of the highest quality which originally was issued in this Deluxe Limited Edition of 1,000 copies (of which this is number #497), It was issued at $750 and generally went only to high end collectors. Since the plates in this volume were not retained, the set will never again be reprinted without second generation images. The codices which had been lost since 1830 have brought to the modern history of mechanics and science the largest single archive of Leonardo's work. These represent his personal work and they were intended for his private work. Whether it is his planned diversion of the Arno River (those who remember the 1966 flood will wish it had been carried out), the fortification works in Peiombino or the giant equestrian statue of Francesco Sforza will gain insight into how one of the great minds in history envisioned and noted his ideas. This set will remain essential and nothing short of access to the originals will allow the serious reader access to his thought and vision. V. 1-2 Facsimiles of Codex Madrid I and II; V. 3: Reti Commentary; V. 4-5 Transcription and translation of Codex Madrid I and II. All volumes are fine in original publishers red morocco with gilt lettering. Originally issued in a lucite case which is not present.
