Paris: Michel Lévy Frères, 1857. Two volumes. [8],[5]-232;[4],[233]-490pp. plus final blank and 36pp. publisher's catalogue dated "Mars 1857." Octavos. Full brown crushed levant, raised bands, spines lettered in gilt, plum morocco doublures, silk moiré endsheets and decorated paper liners, top and fore-edges gilt, lower edges untrimmed and gilt on the rough, by Noulhac, with the original printed wrappers bound in. Modest rubbing to joints, otherwise a fine set. First edition in book form (ordinary issue) of Flaubert's first novel, preceded by serial publication in the REVUE DE PARIS. This copy exhibits the first state of the dedication leaf, with 'Senart' rather than 'Senard.' There were also seventy-five copies printed on thick papier vélin, which are very rare. Upon its serial publication, Flaubert and the proprietors of the REVUE... were prosecuted on the grounds of offences against public morals, but after a sensational trial, were acquitted, leaving the way open for the book publication of what endures as one of the highpoints of 19th century world literature. A choice set. TALVART & PLACE (FLAUBERT) 1a. CARTERET I:263.

London: Chapman & Hall, 1843. Third Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket, As Issued. pp: [viii][1]2-166 [2]. THE THIRD EDITION bound in deep red full calf, ruled in gilt, raised bands to spine with two title pieces, one in blue and one in green, both with gilt lettering. All edge gilt with top edge rough cut, and other edges trimmed. Both paste downs are trimmed with half-inch decorative calf and remainder and end paper are in decorative red paper. The original covers are bound in at the end of the text. The book is held in a brown cloth covered clam shell case with a title piece laid down. A nearly flawless copy. When the novella was published it struck a chord with Victorian readers. Some old Christmas traditions were being revived and new ones (the Christmas tee and Christmas cards) were being introduced. Dickens completed the book in six weeks. And it was released on 17 December, 1943. It was a great success and went into multiple printings with a few months. By May, 1844…

First Edition, First Printing, variant with "Henry Frowde" at base of spine, no established priority, but likely intended for the colonial market. A very good copy, gilt bright on spine, some modest wear and soiling, book block a little loose as often with this bulky volume, bookplate on front pastedown and some corresponding offsetting on front endpaper. An excellent copy, much nicer than usually found. Translated by Constance Garnett.
