Paris: Petrum Santandreanum,. Good with no dust jacket. 1575. Vellum. This book is in good antiquarian condition, bound in full early vellum, complete, with a crown on the front board in gilt and the name Carolus Casali also in gilt. The vellum is smooth, old labels on spine are missing, pages are lightly age toned, occasional very light foxing, but clean and well printed; measuring about 7" by 4 ½", pagination is as follows [24], CCCV [i.e. 309], [27], CC,[200] [24], 76, [4]. Book block is solid, binding firm. The book is complete, handsomely bound in full vellum, actually 3 books bound in one with three title pages, two with the famous printer's engraving of a seated Truth with the sun in her left hand and a cup in her right. It was bound with a small piece of a beautiful 1400s medieval vellum manuscript used in binding the interior sections, handwritten in red and black, in old Gothic lettering. There is one initial with decoration and a number of red and blue initials, as well.Verrius Flaccus was a distinguished Roman philologist and antiquarian; this, his most important work, was an encyclopedic study of Latin words, used today by scholars to recreate Roman life. It contains a wealth of material on Roman history, society, religion and geography. This book has 3 parts in one volume, with three separate title pages. It was printed by the important early printer Petrus Sanctandreanus (also Santancreanus, Pierre de Saint-André) He was the son of the eminent printer Jerome Commelin, and used the same printer's device as his father. This is a very early printing by Sanctandreanus, who was only twenty years old at the time; his father was friendly with Scaliger. The famous engraved printing device of Truth with the sun and a cup of milk, widely admired at the time, was later used by the official printer to the University of Cambridge.; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall .
