[Germantown, PA]: [Germantown Print Works]. Textile. Good. An appealing illustrated broadside on cloth bearing a very early appearance of the famous "I cannot tell a lie" cherry tree story. Collins (Threads of History) says it was printed by the Germantown Print Works in Pennsylvania, ca. 1806. The story itself, which was invented by Washington's biographer Mason Locke Weems, first appeared in print that same year, in the fifth edition of Weems' Life of Washington. Aspiring to present George Washington as an ideal role model for young Americans, Weems embellished and invented biographical details to help demonstrate the founding father's honesty and other virtues. Measures approximately 11 x 11.75 inches. Typical staining, some fraying at the right edge, but entire printed border, often found compromised, is present. A nice example.

London: W.C. Such, Printer and Publisher. Very good. Broadside. Undated, ca. 1922. 25 x 19 cm (ca. 9.75" x 7.5"), on newsprint or similar stock. Old folding creased, closed tear with archival repair on verso; very good. Although this song--a lament for England's poor and unemployed--may have been written as early as the 1890s, this edition, with its plea to "Please buy a copy from an unemployed ex-service man," was printed in the aftermath of World War I. Unemployment in England became a significant problem around 1920, as the country's economy slowed, trade decreased, and debts incurred by the war loomed large. Reincorporating the demobilized troops into the civilian workforce and providing sufficient resources for those disabled during the war proved particularly challenging. We locate copies of this song sheet at the British Library, Bodleian (Ballad-Roud # V20673), and the University of Warwick.

[Germantown, PA: Germantown Print Works, ca. 1806]. First Edition. Original kerchief printed in black on cream glazed cotton, unstitched borders; ink has blurred a bit (possibly at time of production based on other copies we've seen), top edge very slightly frayed, else Near Fine. Quite an impressive and dark impression of this poetry broadside / kerchief celebrating the legend of young George Washington and the cherry tree, the image and accompanying poem depicting the tree as still standing, having only been accidentally but fatally wounded by the careless George as he was chopping off the heads of flowers in the family garden. When confronted with the deed, the culprit cries "Papa, I cannot, will not tell a lie! / My sharp bright hatchet gave the naughty stroke." THREADS OF HISTORY 39, noting variants also printed in brown and blue.

Description:
[Germantown, PA: Germantown Print Works, 1806. Commemorative cotton handkerchief, laid down on a board. 12-1/4" x 11-1/8." Printed in blue inks. "The Love Of Truth" is printed above "Mark The Boy," which is printed on a ribbon that flows across a vignette and down both sides. The vignette depicts a young George Washington and his father in the garden of their home. George carries his hatchet; his father points to the cherry tree. Below the vignette a three-column poem recounts George's famous admission that he had cut down the cherry tree. "I cannot, will not tell a lie." The poem begins, "At six years old, George, full of boyish tricks,/ Would often please himself by chopping sticks." His father, overwhelmed by George's strength of character, says, "Run to my open arms, my dearest boy; / Your love of truth bespeaks a father's joy:/ My sudden anger and my grief are fled,/ Although my lovely cherry-tree is dead" A dark border surrounds the handkerchief. Some lightening at the bottom and light wear,… Read More

Description:
The Henry E. Huntington Library and Art Gallery, San Marino, CA, . 9" by 15 3/4". Huntington Library reproduction, from the original in its collection, of a playbill broadside announcing two comedies plus singers and a tumbling act to be presented in Philadelphia by Thomas Wade West and John Bignall’s American theatrical troupe The Virginia Company Of Comedians Friday evening, August 3rd, 1792. First on the bill is "More Ways Than One," authored by successful 18th century English dramatist Hannah Cowley, creator of many major plays of the period, who famously accused playwright Hannah More of plagiarism. "Ways And Means," the second play, was authored by George Coleman Jr., popular London dramatist who was later made Examiner Of Plays by the British Crown, but whose alleged double standard and severity of censorship with the works of others resulted in extreme unpopularity with his colleagues.
