About This Item
6th printing of author's scarce 2nd book … Slight bumping to heel of spine & repaired closed tear
About the intertwined fates of the Kashpaws and the Lamartines on and around a North Dakota reservation from 1934 to 1984.
The first book in Louise Erdrich's highly acclaimed "Native American" trilogy that includes "The Beet Queen," "Tracks," and "The Bingo Palace," re-sequenced and expanded to include never-before-published chapters.
Set on and around a North Dakota Ojibwe reservation, Love Medicine is the epic story about the intertwined fates of two families: the Kashpaws and the Lamartines.
With astonishing virtuosity, each chapter draws on a range of voices to limn its tales. Black humor mingles with magic, injustice bleeds into betrayal, and through it all, bonds of love and family marry the elements into a tightly woven whole that pulses with the drama of life.
Filled with humor, magic, injustice and betrayal, Erdrich blends family love and loyalty in a stunning work of dramatic fiction. First Ed. Her first novel, winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award and the L.A. Times Award for Best Novel of the Year. Critical acclaim for this novel was instantaneous and unanimous, and it was reprinted several times quickly. Love Medicine was the first in a sequence of novels that is ongoing and has, to date, included four books. Her success with this series, each volume of which has had a larger first printing than the previous one, has helped pave the way for the publication of other Native American woman writers, such as Linda Hogan and Susan Power. Synopsis
Love Medicine is Louise Erdrich’s first novel, published in 1984. Erdrich revised and expanded the novel for an edition issued in 1993, and this version is now considered the definitive edition. Erdrich explores sixty years of a small group of Chippewa living on a fictional reservation in North Dakota. Each chapter is narrated by a different character. These narratives are very conversational, as if the narrators were telling a story, often from the first-person perspective.
