New York: Farrar and Rinehart, 1944. First Edition. First Edition. INSCRIBED by the author prior to publication to actress Nila Mack on the front pastedown: "Dec 17th '43 / For Nile / Dearest of friends / Of course what really want to say, I'm feeling too keenly and deeply to express / Anyhow, who knows better than you how I love you? / Always your / Charlie / Publication date Jan 27th '44 (Plug)." Nila Mack was best known as the creator and director of "Let's Pretend," a long-running CBS radio series for children. She was also the director of Children's Programming at CBS from 1930 to 1953. Prior to television, Mack worked in vaudeville An attractive copy of the author's best-known title, basis for the 1945 drama directed by Billy Wilder and starring Ray Milland. Jackson's book was an overnight success, and the author went on to become an iconic spokesman for Alcoholics Anonymous, being one of the first to expand the scope of AA to discussion of drug use (something very common today). Early inscriptions by him are uncommon, particularly on this title. Old repair (but still good) to the front hinge, light fray to spine ends and a couple of corners, tiny chip to fore-edge of the front endpaper, else Very Good lacking the dust jacket. In a lovely red cloth clamshell box with a black spine label, titles in gilt.
