First edition, first printing, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Becky and Bernard Reis, in admiration of their distinguished selection of Art chef d'oeuvres, Walter Mehring, New York, 1952". Rebecca Reis was a significant New York art collector; her husband was an accountant who served as a financial advisor and patron to many artists and was executor of the Rothko estate. Mehring was a satirical Jewish author whose outspoken attacks on anti-Semitism brought him to the attention of the Nazis. His books were burned by the Brownshirts and he was forced to flee Germany, arranging for his late father's extensive library to be smuggled out after him. While Mehring managed to escape, his library was confiscated and destroyed. The loss provided the starting point for the present book.
