Born in Jesi, a small city in the Italian Marches, of Italian and English parentage, and educated in Switzerland and Portugal, Sabatini sets many of his novels in Jesi's glamorous history, rich with violence and beauty. This work begins with a mockery of royalty, as a royal youth raised in the gutter is interviewed, displaying the language of his crass upbringing.
