New York: Macmillan & Company, Ltd., 1906. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Churchill's first biographic work concentrates on Lord Randolph's career in Parliament after 1880. Lord Randolph died in January 1895 at age 45 following the spectacular collapse of both his health and political career. His son Winston was 20 years old. When he first contemplated writing his father's biography Winston Churchill was a still an itinerant soldier and war correspondent who had yet to write his first book. The son still dwelt very much in his father's shadow, both emotionally and in terms of the political career to which he already aspired. By the time the work was published in 1906, the young Winston Churchill already had half a dozen books to his credit and half a decade in Parliament. By 1906 Churchill had already left his father's political party, prevailed in the same political battle that had terminated his father's career, and was just two years from his first Cabinet post. Churchill was criticized by some reviewers for overplaying his father's accomplishments. Nonetheless, the work was well received both as a frank portrayal of Randolph's extremes and as a showcase for the son's literary talent. Offered here is a very good+ example of the first U.S. edition, which is visually similar but aesthetically superior to the British, having gilt top page edges and a lightly scored cloth binding in addition to the family coat of arms featured in tilt on the front covers. The condition of these books is very good. The maroon cloth bindings are tight and square with sharp corners. The spines are slightly soiled and dulled but nonetheless retain very good shelf presentation. Exterior wear is slight, primarily confined to the spine ends and a slight, U-shaped indentation on the Volume II front cover. The contents are unusually bright and tight. Even the untrimmed text block fore edges are clean and bright. No gutter breaks. No previous owner inscriptions or bookplates. Spotting is confined to the illustrated plates. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A17.2, Woods/ICS A8(ab), Langworth p.71

The Official Biography of Winston Churchill, initiated by Randolph Churchill but completed by Martin Gilbert, is an epic piece of scholarship about a singularly epic life, comprising eight mammoth main text volumes. The British and U.S. first editions of the eight main text volumes were published between 1966 and 1988. This is a proof copy of the first volume of the official biography, spanning the years 1874 to 1900, from Churchill's birth, to his early career as a soldier and war correspondent, to his return to England from an American lecture tour in order to embark on his storied political career. This copy is in very good+ condition. It is bound in unmarked tan wraps. The half-title reads: "PROOF COPY This proof copy has been prepared for Mrs. Jackson." Description:
London: George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd., 1934. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Here is a jacketed British first edition, first printing of Volume II. Churchill's monumental biography of his great ancestor, John Churchill, the first Duke of Marlborough, was initially conceived a full 40 years before publication of the fourth and final volume. Churchill originally considered the idea of the biography in 1898, returning to it in earnest in 1928. Marlborough ultimately took 10 years of research and writing and is the most substantial published work of Churchill's "wilderness years" in the 1930s. The final volume was published on the eve of the Second World War in 1938. Richard Langworth says "To understand the Churchill of the Second World War, the majestic blending of his commanding English with historical precedent, one has to read Marlborough." The first edition of Marlborough was originally issued in four volumes between 1933 and 1938. It was very well received - both critically and aesthetically. The first… Read More

Description:
London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1930. First edition, first printing. Full leather. This is a finely bound copy of the first edition, first printing of Churchill’s autobiography. My Early Life sold very well at the time and has seen a great many editions since, many of them collectible in their own right, but of course a premium attaches to first editions. The challenge for collectors is that the plum colored binding of this edition proved especially susceptible to fading, soiling, and wear; nearly all copies are considerably spine faded. Hence this finely bound example. We commissioned the binding in full dark plum morocco, deferential to the original binding color. The binding features hubbed spine with gilt-tooled and decoratively framed raised bands, gilt lion rampant in the unprinted compartments, and twin brown spine labels. The beveled edge boards are framed in gilt and gilt-tooled turn-ins framing handsome marbled endpapers. The contents are bound with silk head and tail bands and gilt… Read More

Description:
London: Macmillan and Company, 1906. First edition, only printing. Hardcover. This is a first edition set of Winston Churchill's biography of his father, Lord Randolph Churchill. The first edition, only printing, is aesthetically pleasing, featuring deep red cloth, untrimmed page edges, gilt stamping, and the family coat of arms in gilt on the front covers. However, the red cloth binding of this edition proved quite susceptible to fading and wear and the contents to heavy spotting. First edition sets are not especially uncommon, but collector worthy sets are scarce. This set is in very good condition. The red cloth bindings remain square, tight, and bright. There is modest shelf wear to extremities as well as modest scuffs and blemishes, a bump to the upper front corner of Volume II, and some abrasion to the lower Volume I rear corner. Shelf presentation is quite respectable for the edition, with no appreciable color shift between the covers and spine and bright spine gilt. The contents remain… Read More

Description:
London: Burns Oates & Washbourne Ltd., 1934. First edition, only printing. Paperback. This pamphlet publishes Churchill's tribute to his first cousin and "oldest and dearest friend" Charles Richard John, IXth Duke of Marlborough. The string-bound pamphlet in blue-grey card covers measures 7.25 x 5.25 inches (18.4 x 13.3 cm) and is 20 pages in length. Pages 5-11 contain Churchill's tribute and pages 12-18 that of C.C. Martindale (Jesuit author, scholar, and Oxford philosopher). This first edition, only printing is a near fine copy, clean and complete with sharp corners. We note only a hint of wear to the spine ends and a tiny blemish to the lower rear cover that shows also on the rear cover verso and facing verso (blank apart from the name of the printer at the foot of the page). The contents are otherwise clean and bright with neither spotting nor previous ownership marks. Winston met his cousin, the future Duke of Marlborough, in late 1893, and wrote to his mother on 30 December 1893, “I am… Read More

Description:
London: Macmillan and Company Limited, 1907. Hardcover. This is the 1907 first one-volume unabridged edition of Winston Churchill’s biography of his father. The British first edition was published in two volumes in 1906. In 1907, the publisher issued this one-volume edition, containing the full text of the two-volume work as originally published in 1906, but printed on thinner paper. The binding closely resembles the first edition of just a year earlier. Here is a very good plus copy. The red cloth binding remains tight and square with sharp corners, nicely rounded spine, bright spine gilt, and none of the usual color shift between the spine and covers. Minor wear is limited to extremities. Wrinkling to the front cover cloth looks like it may be an original binding fault. The contents remain bright and clean with no spotting and no inscriptions. The sole previous ownership mark is a rather amusing (and slightly self-contradictory) unofficial review in pencil on the first free endpaper that… Read More

Description:
London: The Library of Imperial History, 1974. Hardcover. This is Winston Churchill's first biographic work, the subject of which is his father, Lord Randolph Churchill. This lovely edition was produced in very limited numbers using sheets from the 1974 Collected Works that were never bound by the original publisher. This edition contains the full, unabridged text of the 1906 first edition with the added benefit of the author's new Foreword from the 1952 Odhams edition. The result is the superb contents of the Collected Works - printed on 500-year archival paper with gilt top edge - in a heavy, red buckram binding with the Churchill Arms on the front cover. The contents are bound with red and gold head and tail bands and gray endpapers. The binding is far more practical and durable than the vellum in which most Collected Works volumes were originally bound. This copy is in as new condition, the binding and contents pristine with no wear, defects, or previous ownership marks. Winston Churchill’s… Read More

Description:
London: Macmillan and Company Limited, 1907. Hardcover. This is the 1907 first one-volume unabridged edition of Winston Churchill’s biography of his father. This copy is more noteworthy for provenance than for intrinsic collectible value. The only previous owner mark in the book is inked in three lines on the front free endpaper recto: “Margaret Moss | Cowichan Station | B.C.” This book belonged to Margaret Johnstone Moss (1871-1937) of Cowichan Station, British Columbia. Margaret is noteworthy both for her accomplishments and for the fact that her history is substantially known – atypical for a woman of her time. During the Boer War Margaret was selected by the British Colonial office to work among the women and children in the concentration camps in Bloemfontein, South Africa, and was later put in charge of educational services there. It was likely here that Margaret met Major Claude Moss, then serving as the deputy assistant adjutant general of the Orange River Colony. They married Dec. 24,… Read More

New York: Macmillan & Co., Ltd., 1906. First U.S. edition, only printing. Hardcover. This is the first U.S. edition, only printing, of Winston Churchill’s 1906 biography of his father, Lord Randolph Churchill. This U.S. edition is visually similar but aesthetically superior to its British counterpart, the volumes featuring gilt top page edges and a ribbed cloth binding with gilt and blind rules and the Marlborough Arms in gilt within a double blind ruled front cover panel. This set is in good minus overall condition, sound, complete, and unrestored but showing age and experience. The cloth bindings retain strong red hue and bright spine and front cover gilt, but show moderate overall scuffing, fraying at points to the extremities, and some wrinkling and concavity to the spine cloth, particularly that of Volume I. The contents are notably bright and clean for the edition with no spotting, strong top edge gilt, and clean fore and bottom edges. The same previous owner name, date of “1920”, and… Read More

Description:
Indianapolis: Dog Ear Publishing, January 2013. Trade Paperback. Fine. Slight reading wear to corners, otherwise pristine. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. Not damaged. Suitable for gifting. 163 pages. The 25 authors of this book were volunteers in the first Peace Corps rural community development project in Africa: Sierra Leone, 1965-67. They are also the first group to tell a collective story of Peace Corps volunteers, anywhere. The Peace Corps was in its infancy then, and memories of John Kennedy were strong among the young volunteers. Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.
