New York: Simon and Schuster, 1975. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/near fine. First printing, octavo size, 284 pp., inscribed by Judith Rossner. No. 1 on the New York Times bestseller list for three weeks - and on the list for thirty-six weeks - "Looking for Mr. Goodbar" was an immediate, and enormous, success, becoming the fourth-highest selling novel of that year, with "Time Magazine" stating that the book "richly deserves its success" (n.b., per Wiki).
Based on the true story of a schoolteacher who was murdered in 1973 by a man she met in a singles bar, the story interested Judith Rossner (1935-2005) whose previous three novels had not sold well, although she was admired by the critics. "Looking for Mr. Goodbar" would be made into a film by Paramount in 1977, starring Diane Keaton and Richard Gere, to mixed reviews but commercial success.
This copy inscribed by the author on the second flyleaf "For the Handsomest / Sales Manager / in New York / Judy" - apparently a friend as well, as, while we find other instances where she signed as "Judy" it appears uncommon.
___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full light brown linen cloth over boards, brown and white lettering stamped onto the spine, brown endpapers, inscription by the author in black felt-tip pen on the second flyleaf as set forth above, first printing with the full number line on the copyright page; octavo size (8.5" by 5.5"), pagination: [1-8] 9-284. In the publisher's dust jacket with the original price of $7.95, illustration on the front upon a tan background with brown and black lettering, grey, black and brown lettering on the spine, black-and-white photograph of the author on the back panel with a listing of her previous novels, summary of the book with the main characters on both flaps.
___CONDITION: Fine, with clean boards showing no wear, perfectly straight corners without rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; the lightest of bumping to the head of the spine, else fine. The unclipped dust jacket near fine with a bit of sunning to the spine and a few minor areas of light edgewear.
___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.
