New York: Charles Scribner's Sons,, 1957. A handsomely bound copy of Gorsline's illustrated edition of Thomas Wolfe's first novel. Douglas Gorsline (1913-1985) was an American writer and artist who illustrated several children's books, including The Night Before Christmas, Christopher Morley's The Haunted Bookshop, and his own novel Farm Boy. This is the only Wolfe novel illustrated by Gorsline, and this illustrated edition was first published in 1947. Octavo (239 x 169). Contemporary red morocco by Maurin, titles to spine in gilt, five raised bands tooled in gilt, floral motif in gilt in compartments, two-line ruled border in gilt to covers, scrolling foliate turn-ins gilt, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, red silk bookmark. 12 plates, numerous illustrations to text. A fine copy.

Synopsis

Look Homeward, Angel: A Story of the Buried Life is a 1929 novel by Thomas Wolfe. It is Wolfe's first novel, and is considered a highly autobiographical American Bildungsroman. The character of Eugene Gant is generally believed to be a depiction of Wolfe himself. The novel covers the span of time from Gant's birth to the age of 19. The setting is the fictional town and state of Altamont, Catawba, which is considered to be a not-so-subtle mirror of his hometown, Asheville, North Carolina.
