About This Item

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1929. Cloth. Very Good. WARMLY INSCRIBED BY THOMAS WOLFE TO SOCIALITE LEAH EAKER on the front free endpaper. A tight, presentable copy to boot of the 1929 true 1st edition (with the Scribner colophon and the 1929 date on the copyright and title pages, respectively) of Wolfe's first published novel. Solid and VG- to VG in its dark cloth, with bright gilt-titling to the front panel and rubbed (but still readable) titling along the spine. Light spotting to the front panel and along the outer hinges, light wear at the spine crown, Leah Eaker's name in her hand above the author's inscription. Thick 12mo, one of the seminal "first books" of the 20th century and another coup for Maxwell Perkins, Scribners' redoubtable editor.

Synopsis

Look Homeward, Angel: A Story of the Buried Life is a 1929 novel by Thomas Wolfe. It is Wolfe's first novel, and is considered a highly autobiographical American Bildungsroman. The character of Eugene Gant is generally believed to be a depiction of Wolfe himself. The novel covers the span of time from Gant's birth to the age of 19. The setting is the fictional town and state of Altamont, Catawba, which is considered to be a not-so-subtle mirror of his hometown, Asheville, North Carolina.
