Sheet size: 28.2 x 20.3cm; Plate size (including caption and title): 22.2 x 17.9 cm. Summary: A theater scene with Lola Montez dancing on stage. A man in the audience with a Puritan hat holds a book, "Sober thoughts," and peeks at her through his fingers. Another man on stage has a paper in his pocket, "Manager Agreement Half the House." Print condition: three very small closed tears well clear of image area, one at top edge and two at far right edge. A gorgeous example of this very scarce David Claypoole Johnston print; fresh and vibrant, with deep dark blacks and clear, strong lines. A very strong impression in lovely condition. Artist: Johnston, David Claypoole, (1799-1865). Subject: Lola Montez (1818-1861). Irish dancer, and one time mistress of the King of Bavaria, she toured the United States in 1851-53, near the end of a long and scandalous career marked by serial husbands and lovers. In this print she is shown performing her crazy making "Spider Dance". Probably drawn for John L. Magee's "The Old Soldier" monthly and issued separately.
