About This Item

Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Art Museums, 2002. Hardcover. NF/VG. Pale grey cloth/boards; silver lettering. Grey dj with sculpture illus. and bw/red lettering. Image of Lois Orswell's personal bookplate on FEP. 387 pp. with 85 color and 117 bw illustrations. Lois Orswell was a pioneering collector of abstract expressionist art and modern sculpture in a time when men dominated the art world. Her collection focused on sculpture and drawings, especially those of Franz Kline, Willem de Kooning, Auguste Rodin, Alexander Calder, Henry Moore, Louise Nevelson, and many others, but most importantly, David Smith. The book highlights the close connection between Orswell and Smith and publishes, for the first time, their correspondence, which sheds important new light on the sculptor's personality and professional practice. Also included is the history of Orswell's collection, which numbers over 340 objects and is housed at the Harvard University Art Museums. - paraphrased from the book's description. Contents as follows: L.O. -- Prelude -- Novitiate -- Collecting -- Vibrations -- Floating -- Goddess -- Margaret -- New York -- David -- Chronology of ownership -- Exhibitions from the collection.
