[Harbin]: Tip. N. A. Frenkelia, [1930]. Oblong quarto (19 × 26.5 cm). Original printed self-wrappers; 26 pp. Spine repaired with tape, possibly re-stapled; a few small pen annotations in ink; small tear to front cover; overall still about very good. Scarce photo-illustrated volume gathering song lyrics of tunes popular among listeners in the Russian Far Eastern Diaspora. Due to the development of the Russian Far-Eastern Railroad, Russia had a strong presence in Northern China in the early twentieth-century, especially in Manchuria. After the October Revolution, both Harbin and Shanghai became home to tens of thousands of further immigrants who fled the Bolshevik regime. Perhaps most importanltly, the book is one of the earliest Russian publications in China to include lyrics by Aleksandr Vertinskii, the tremendously popular Russian singer-poet and cabaret performer, who would go on to perform in Harbin in the 1930s. Other artists whose repertoire is featured, usually accompanied by a one-page biography and portrait photograph, are lesser known singers such as L. A. Vitel's, I. V. Granovskaia, Mariia Sadovskaia, E. E. Silinskaia, A. L. Shemanskii, and A. Z. Karmelinskii ("the popular Pierrot of the Far East"). With numerous adverts documenting Russian life in Harbin and Shanghai. Polansky 464. As of November 2019, not in KVK and OCLC.
