A Londres: Par Iehan Bill, imprimatur du Roy, 1616. [544]pp. A-E4 [2]A-2R4; A-Z3 (plus blank). Quarto. Contemporary armorial calf. Titles within woodcut borders, decorated initials, contemporary typographic wastesheets utilized in binding. Light smear to 2H1v, occasional marginal tidemarks, a couple signatures starting, covers splayed and a bit discolored, lower joint split, early ink ownership inscription on front binder's blank, more annotations on verso of rear binder's blank, marginal flaw in fore-edge of 2E4; still, if one elected to discard the remaining not insignificant vestigial virtues of the original binding, a copy that could be rendered fairly agreeable if placed in modern dress. First edition of the first French translation of the 1603 King James I Prayer Book, translated by Pierre de Laune, past of the French Reformed congregation in Norwich. The translation was "originally commissioned by James I to promote a royal marriage between Henry Prince of Wales (d. 1612) with the French princess Christine; some years later the project was revived in connection with the marriage of Charles Prince of Wales & Princess Henrietta Maria of France ..." - Griffiths. The section of the Psalms has its own woodcut decorated title-leaf (2R4). Although common enough institutionally -- ESTC locates eleven copies in North America, spread over 8 locations - the last perfect copy noted in ABPC is the Evelyn copy (1977), with only one other appearance following that, a copy lacking a blank and one text leaf, GRIFFITHS 36.2 STC 16431. Description:
Montpleasant, Ohio: Elisha Bates, 1825. The author was a prominent Friend or Quaker in Ohio during the 1820s and 1830s. Bates became the publisher of The Philanthropist, from 1818 to 1822. The Philanthropist was the first anti-slavery newspaper in the United States and also supported temperance and the fair treatment of Native Americans. Bates began publishing another periodical, The Moral Advocate, in March 1821. Bates also became the leader of the Mount Pleasant Meeting of the Society of Friends (Quakers.) Bates' only book, this volume, was self-published in 1825. Author Donald Good in his 1969 article "Elisha Bates and Social Reform" states that Bates' Doctrine of Friends was "judged to be one of the best brief accounts of Friends' view in existence." After the publication of his book, dramatic changes began to foment within the Quakers religion with what became known as the Hicksite - Orthodox Schism. Bates, who favored Orthodoxy, was a staunch opponent of… Read More

Some offsetting from the wrappers to adjacent endleaves at edges, crown and toe of spine of wrapper chipped away, some occasional smudges, otherwise a lovely copy in original state. Second (enlarged) edition, after the much more modest list printed by William Bowyer in 1777. The entire work is an amplification, according to the subtitle, of "A Manuscript List of English Bibles, copied from one compiled by the late Joseph Ames. presented to the Lambeth-Library by Dr. Gifford ....," with "later Discoveries of several Learned Gentlemen ...." The identity of the actual printer is not recorded in ESTC. Ducarel was the first lay librarian at Lambeth, serving some 27 years beginning in 1757. Description:
London: Printed for Dan. Brown at the Black Swan and Bible without Temple-bar, and Andr. Bell at the Cross-keys and Bible in Cornhil, 1700. First edition of this verse translation of the Song of Songs by Joseph Stennett (1663-1713), the first important Baptist hymnwriter in England: "Thy Lips, my Spouse, that move with skill, / Drops like the Hony-comb distil. / Hony and Milk's beneath thy Tongue, / Which feeds the Weak as well as strong." In his scholarly preface, Stennett is quick to assure readers that the Hebrew text is not about sexual desire, despite appearances: "some have denied that [Solomon] wrote it by Divine Inspiration; and make his Design to be only that of celebrating his Amours with Pharoah's Daughter, or some other person." The passion of the bridegroom and the bride is to be understood, however, as a divine allegory of Christ's love for his church, the same "mystical Espousals" found in the 45th Psalm, which Stennett also translates here. Description:
Tan leather heavily embossed with fruit, leaves and grain with the title on the front board and the spine. A personal Bible of outstanding artistry Beautifully bound and tooled edition
The Bible is a collection of religious texts, writings, or scriptures sacred in Christianity, Judaism, Samaritanism, Islam, Rastafari, and many other faiths. It appears in the form of an anthology, a compilation of texts of a variety of forms that are all linked by the belief that they are collectively revelations of God. These texts include theologically-focused historical accounts, hymns, prayers, proverbs, parables, didactic letters, admonitions, essays, poetry, and prophecies. Believers also generally consider the Bible to be a product of divine inspiration. Those books that are included in the Bible by a tradition or group are called canonical, indicating that the tradition/group views the collection as the true representation of God's word and will. A number of biblical canons have evolved, with overlapping and… Read More
