Little Women: Or Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy, PART FIRST & PART SECOND, 1870 on Title Page.

by Louisa May Alcott

  • Used
  • Hardcover
  • first

Here we offer a set of first edition and very early printings of Louisa May Alcott's classic, Little Women, published by the Roberts Brothers, Boston 1870. This is a two volume set Part First and Part Second on spine. Each issued in gilt-impressed maroon cloth and has illustrations inside.

Each volume is a well-worn copy with wear to the boards and spine (see pics.) Each volume has been rebound with new book cloth applied to support the spine cloth and new gold place holding ribbons. Both are mildly stained and foxed throughout with a few dog-ears. Both volumes have an inscription written in them as they were gifts.

" Part First" has a period bookplate on it's original endpapers and new saddles of acid-free bond at the front and rear gutters. There is a lean to the text block (which has been true of every one of these I've seen.) The binding is remarkably tight and square; the text and illustrations are bright and crisp. Intact frontispiece tissue. Spine say's 'Part First' and has some scuffing and fading wear. Front cover of book has some wear to the gilt impression (see pics.), but is still easy to read. Has 1870 on the title page under the publisher listed, copyright page is listed 1868. Book is 341 pages long with advertisements in back page #'s as follows 10,14, page without #, 20,21,22,23 and last page no #.

"Part Second" listed on the spine. Has acid-free replacement endpapers, flyleaves, and frontispiece tissue. Binding is very tight. Spine has scuffing and title fading wear. Has 1870 on the title page and 1869 on copyright page. Book is 359 pages long and also has some advertising pages in back. Advertisement pages listed as # 10,14, page without #, 20,21,22,23 and another page without a number. The text and illustrations are bright and crisp.

Feel free to email me if you have a question, I'am happy to provide more pictures as well. I have stored the book very carefully for years, for its age it is in solid shape. It's a beautiful set and I wasn't planning on selling it at all, but alas Covid-19 hit my Amazon store hard. So I will be saying goodbye to this little beauty and passing on caretaker duties. This classic book set is highly collectible, a great investment and continues to increase in value every year. They are getting harder and harder to find every year as well, not that many copies were printed of the First Editions early printings like these.

1589 ENORMOUS LAW Corpus Juris Civilis Justinian Codex Digest Godefroy 6v SET

"Freedom is the natural ability of everyone to do what he likes, unless it is prohibited by law or by force."
― Justinian I
Justinian's 'Corpus Juris Civilis' is unquestionably the fundamental work on law and jurisprudence! Parts of this work were originally intended to be used by law students, but they were not solely used as a textbook – they carried legal weight …as law! It includes four distinct parts – Codex, Digest, Institutes, and Novellae – each written with a different purpose.
'Digest' or 'Pandectae' is a collection of juristic treatises taken from various legal writings of Ulpian and Paulus. 'Codex'
was the Justinian's attempt at organizing the laws in a systematic manner – each of these works is included in this enormous 16th-century six-volume edition.
The Godefroy editions of this iconic work were influential in the law field well into the 20th-century. While Godefroy was known as a jurist, his… Read More
