Boston, MA: The Horn Book, Inc., [1965]., [1965].. Very good. - 16mo [5-1/2 inches high by 3-7/8 inches wide], decorative blue, tan & cream boards titled in blue on a cream ground on the front cover. There is a tiny chip to the head & another to the tail of the spine with minor soiling to the front cover. vi & 57 pages plus an ad for The Horn-Book, Inc. Black-and-white illustrations, including a folding map. A folding color facsimile of the Royal Battledore, printed by John Newbery, is tipped onto page 39. Very good.

The horn-book was the earliest lesson book for children. It was not a book in the traditional sense: The lesson-sheet was pasted on a paddle-shaped piece of wood, metal or other material which could be hand-held while studying. It was closely related to the battledore, of which a facsimile is shown on page 39.
