About This Item

Methuen, London, 1977. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Condition/Very Good. 300 g; XIV, 146 pages, indexed with the further reading list. In original black papered boards, with illustrated dust jacket which appears to have been protected with clear adhesive plastic from the time of purchase. Slight dustiness to the top of the text block. Otherwise no damage. This is the 1st serious attempt to apply linguistic methods to the structure of fiction. The author demonstrates the relevance of linguistics in 2 areas. 1st, the theory of language provides a "framework" or "model" for the general structure of fiction, a way of understanding traditional concepts like plots, theme, character, style, point of view. 2nd, linguistics offers a method of analysis for practical criticism of actual texts.
