A presentation of the theory, computational techniques, and applications of linear programming,The text gives a fairly complete and rigorous development of the subject. Some familiarity with linear algebra and convex sets is assumed. The necessary mathematical background is covered briefly in one chapter. The reader completely unfamiliar with linear algebra will probably find it desirable to study simultaneously some text such as the author's Linear Algebra. In fact, the latter book was designed expressly to precede the present text. A great deal of material not found in other books on the subject is presented here. This includes the primaldual algorithm; the decomposition principle; generalized machine assignment problems; the transhipment problem; the network flow algorithm for transportation problems and a novel development of the theory of transportation problems. Separate chapters are devoted to applications of linear programming to industrial problems and to problems in economic theory. Another strong point of the text is the large number of problems included for solution. The problems deal with both theoretical and computational aspects of the subject.
