Philadelphia: T. Sinclair, 1856. unbound. Color Lithograph. Image measures 6.5" x 9.5".<br/><br/> This beautiful 1856 view of the Lighthouse at Point de Galle, Ceylon (Sri Lanka) was issued by T. Sinclair. It features natives in the foreground who are either fishing or with cattle. In the background the Point de Galle light is visible. Known to be Sri Lanka's oldest light station, the lighthouse was built in 1840 and was powered by a weight driven machine. The original lighthouse, pictured here, was destroyed by a fire in 1934 and a new lighthouse was built in its place.<br> <br> > This view, drawn from nature by Wilhelm Heine with figures by Eliphalet Brown Jr. appears in Francis Hawk's 'Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan Performed in the years 1852, 1853, and 1854, under the Command of Commodore M. C. Perry'. In good condition with minor foxing.<br> <br> Dr. Francis Lister Hawks (1798-1866) was an American priest of the Episcopal Church, and a politician in North Carolina.<br/><br/>
