Good HCs, no DJs. 2 volume set. Green-brown buckram cloth over boards, gilt stamped titles on spines. Covers are scuffed with uneven fading and some spotty stains; some rubbing at spine ends and fore corners, light fraying; both volumes tightly bound; interiors are clean with slight general age darkening; all leaves are supple, not brittle; cover leaf of final issue has short closed tear at mid-cover. Issues run from Vol 1, No 1 (April 30, 1910) through Vol 3, No 37 (January 11, 1913), presumably a complete run. Liberal-reformist weekly newspaper ran 1910-1913. Initial editor was Edward H. A very good four volume set in contemporary, full tree calf binding with double lettering pieces in red and green. Complete pp. [iii]-vii, [1] 222; [2], 206; [2], 238 & [2], 198. No half-titles which may or may not be wanting, but the pagination for the prelims to vol. I might suggest that one is required? Very good bindings with a little rubbing, a couple of volumes slightly chipped to the head/tail of the spines, corners lightly bruised. Contents clean and tight, manuscript (Greek?) initials to title pages dated 1788 otherwise unmarked, no foxing, paper crisp. A very good set. A Rare Eighteenth Century Novel. We have managed to located just one other copy at auction in the last thirty years and that at Sotheby's sale of July 21, 1993, where it made £1,000 on the hammer, though seemingly not such a nice copy. Muscatine, The Prairie Press, 1938, first edition.. One of just 490 hardcover copies of Stegner's elusive third book, color first letters of each chapter and with the running heads at the side of pages, with red page numbers, this is a great private press production, the book was dedicated to Philip and Margaret Gray, the friends of Stegner who were the models for the characters in his acclaimed novel, Crossing to Safety, Colberg A3. Clean and bright, at least very nearly fine.

New York: Baker & Godwin, 1863. First Edition. Octavo. 117 pages, Index. Inscribed: "To David C. Acton, with the esteem and respect of his friend, David M. Barnes, July 1864." Acton had been made President of the Board of Police Commissioners in New York in 1860, a position he held until the outbreak of the Civil War. He was replaced by John G. Bergen and John Kennedy who became incapacitated in July 1863 as the mob protesting the draft began to cause mayhem (burning down the Colored Orphan Asylum, p. 117). Acton re-assumed command for the next five days and did not sleep as he quelled the riot. He himself was left with severe health problems for the next five years. Pastedown on verso of Dedicatory page, handwritten note: "Times of August 16, 1863" with newspaper column printing letter to Gen. Harvey Brown which in the later reply from Gen. This is a complete 19 Volume set of "HOUSEHOLD WORDS" - A Weekly Journal by Charles Dickens. The volumes span the years 1850 (Volume I) to 1859 (Volume XIX).
