Condition:
Nice covers with only a very light stain (barely noticeable) at the top-right corner of the front cover; tiny cloth tear at the lower-outer corner of the front cover; bright gilt lettering on the spine; tiny cloth tear at the top-left corner of the spine. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Great condition pages with only a small stain at the outer margin of pages iii and 51, a small stain at the inner edge of the Garfield inauguration illustration, and a few random, light ink smudges; no foxing found; name written in pencil on front end paper...no other writing found. The rear blank end paper is affixed to the pastedown about 1" at the center of the outer edge - it appears the end paper had attempted to be separated, resulting in a 3" tear...no other tears found. Overall a very nice copy of the scarce first edition.

Rare original poetry book with cloth covered boards, copyright 1880 by J. W. Shoemaker & Co. This edition published in 1906 by the Penn Publishing company, Philadelphia. From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns. Light rubbing and bumps to outside spine edges. Back cover and interior cloth covered board has a stain at top. Original owner's name and address from 1908, but no other writing or marks. First 2 pages have a stain at top, but text of 192 pages of poetry and recitations is totally clean with light tanning of pages.
