ILLUSTRATED WITH A FRONTISPIECE PORTRAIT ENGRAVED BY PETER MAVERICK - Octavo, 8-1/2 inches high by 5-1/2 inches wide. A complete copy which would be well worth rebinding.

The American engraver and lithographer Peter Maverick (1780-1831) was the son of the British-born engraver Peter Rushton Maverick. When he was but 9 years old Peter Maverick published his first work. After first founding his own business in NYC, he moved to Newark, New Jersey in 1809, setting up shop in that city while maintaining a presence in New York. The Hudson River School painter and engraver Asher B. Durand, a student of Maverick's, worked as his apprentice and subsequently became his partner in 1817. Returning to NYC in 1820, Maverick took up lithography and produced the plates for the 1824 "Annals of the Lyceum of Natural History of New York".
