Hoole's English translation of this epic poem written by the 16th century Italian poet, worked on while Hoole was supposed to be studying law. Front pastedown bears bookseller label and two previous owner bookplates, including that of Philip Hone, Federalist Mayor of New York from 1825-1826 and one of the founders of the New York Mercantile Library (rechristened the Center for Fiction in 2005). ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .

Boston: I. Thomas (Isaiah Thomas) and E. T. Andrews, 1792. First Edition First Printing . Hardcover. Fair. 12mo. 216 pages. Hardcover bound in original paper-covered wooden boards. The binding is very worn, and the spine has perished, exposing the gatherings and stitching. The wooden boards are chipped, especially at the fore edges and along the bottom of the front cover. Much of the paper on the rear board is peeled or chipped off. The binding is still holding. Untrimmed. Complete with the copperplate engraved frontis and the footnote at page 77. Some foxing to the text. The title page and frontis are especially foxed and soiled. Early signature at the top edge of the front flyleaf appears to read "N. Pike," but there is some chipping right along the top edge at the signature. Rare.

Black leather label in the second compartment of each volume with gilt-tooled title: Rollin's Belles Lettres; volume number gilt-tooled in third compartment of each. Gilt-tooled decoration in remaining compartments. "London 1742" gilt-tooled at tail of each spine. All page edges speckled red. The Third Edition. "Books printed for C. Hitch" on verso of first and sixth preliminary leaves of vol. 4. Two small engraved armorial bookplates on fixed endpaper of each volume of William Lee Antonie, Esq., with motto: "Verum Atque Decens." Written above the bookplates is a note indicating that the volumes were part of the library at Totteridge Park in May 1842. Three volumes complete, second edition, octavo; xlviii, 436; viii, 440; x, 458pp. In contemporary half calf over salmon marbled boards (lightly worn with very minor loss to extremities), flat spines divided by double gil fillets into six compartments, gilt lettered black spine labels to second compartment, gilt volume number direct to spine in fourth compartment, early ink inscription to front pastedowns (bequeathing the set to one John Hyhatt, 1824), a few unobtrusive very light stains and spots to opening and closing leaves. A clean and attractive example of this uncommon complete set. ESTC N37556 citing just three institutional locations, 1 x UK (National Library of Wales) and 2 x US (McMaster University and Union Theological Seminary).
