Hoole's English translation of this epic poem written by the 16th century Italian poet, worked on while Hoole was supposed to be studying law. Front pastedown bears bookseller label and two previous owner bookplates, including that of Philip Hone, Federalist Mayor of New York from 1825-1826 and one of the founders of the New York Mercantile Library (rechristened the Center for Fiction in 2005). ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .

The binding is very worn, and the spine has perished, exposing the gatherings and stitching. The wooden boards are chipped, especially at the fore edges and along the bottom of the front cover. Much of the paper on the rear board is peeled or chipped off. The binding is still holding. Untrimmed. Complete with the copperplate engraved frontis and the footnote at page 77. Some foxing to the text. The title page and frontis are especially foxed and soiled. Early signature at the top edge of the front flyleaf appears to read "N. Pike," but there is some chipping right along the top edge at the signature. Rare.

The Spectator was a two or three page paper written by Addison and Steele that was published from 1711-1712 in London, England. Eight bound volumes of The Spectator were published in later runs, each volume containing about 200 daily editions.Boards are rubbed, scuffed and soiled and most of the gilt spine titles and red band backgrounds have faded. Corners are bumped. Volume two's rear board and volume eight's front board have seperated from the spine but have a very clean break and could be reattached with some basic rebinding. Raised spine ribs. Endpapers and title pages show minor browning with age, but all other pages are clean and bright for their age. Indexes at the rear of the texts.
