1878 1st ed Confederate General Albert Sidney Johnston Civil War TEXAS CSA

Albert Sidney Johnston was an American military general known for his roles in the Mexican American War and most notably the American Civil War. According to President Jefferson Davis, Johnston was the 'finest general officer in the Confederacy' before Robert E. Lee; Davis continued 'without doing injustice to the living, it may safely be said that our loss is irreparable." Interestingly, he was the highest-ranking officer to be killed in action during the entirety of the Civil War.

In 1878, a life of Johnston was published, outlining the major events in the general's life. According to Eicher, this work

"highlights Johnston's early life, career in the Black Hawk War, days at Jefferson Barracks, the Texas Revolution, the Mexican War years, and the his role in the Mormon Rebellion. The work attacks Grant and Confederates in dispute with Johnston. It remains valuable for its discussion of the general's antebellum life and for personal anecdotes."

Description:
1842 William Paley Natural Theology Christian Apologetics Science Philosophy
A scarce printing of William Paley's famous Christian apologetics work, 'Natural Theology'. A scientific and philosophical treatise, this title is commonly referenced amongst scholars when discussing the history and development of the modern understanding of scientific evolution. Significantly influenced by naturalist John Ray's work, Paley further developed Ray's ideas by proposing that the oft-observed complex adaptations seen in plants and animals were evidence of benevolent divine design. Notably, this work is also the origin of the "watchmaker analogy" a now, well-known, and commonly used teleological argument.
This rare, illustrated edition includes the highly-desired companion collection of 40 engraved plates by James Paxton that were originally independently published in 1826.

Description:
1715 Blaise PASCAL Pensees Christian Apologetic Pascal's Wager French Philosophy
"Men despise religion. They hate it and are afraid it may be true. The cure for this is first to show that religion is not contrary to reason, but worthy of reverence and respect. Next make it attractive, make good men wish it were true, and then show that it is."
– Pascal, Pensees
Blaise Pascal's thoughts, organized as "Pensees," were written as a collection of writings on theology and philosophy. 'Pensees' was a culmination of all of Pascal's non-mathematic discoveries and ideas which ultimately led him to a life of religious asceticism. He defended Christianity in this work. In doing so, it 'became one of the most famous Christian books in history.' (Keller, Gospel Coalition). 'Pascal was aware that, very often, we see only what we want to see' (Morris, 145) and because of that, he hoped to be able to 'convince man to overcome the natural reluctance many feel toward religion.' The concept of "Pascal's Wager" stems… Read More

1836 AFRICA 1ed Lander Niger River Exploration Illustrated Maps Slavery

Richard Lander was an English explorer who made his name for his voyages into Africa. After nearly a decade of African voyages, the British government sent Richard and his brother John in 1830 to explore the Niger River. While at the river delta, they were captured by local tribes for a short time. Their voyage did yield grand results – they discovered the Niger River course and outlets.
The specifics of the journey were written and published under various titles, including 'The Travels of Richard and John Lander'. This work is a fascinating account of African culture, geography, and 19th-century exploration. This 1836 first edition includes nine fine, full-page engravings, including maps and views of local tribes.

1822 Famous 2ed David Porter Journal USS Essex Battle of Valparaiso War of 1812

David Porter was an early American naval captain who served on the USS Constitution and the USS Essex. While aboard the Essex, Porter faced significant hardships, including the Battle of Valparaiso where the ship was ultimately disabled. Porter kept a journal of his time aboard the Essex, a journal that was quickly published after capture of the Essex.
According to Hill, the second of Porter's 'Journal' is the "best edition" and is more complete even than the first. In fact, this edition contains the first instance of the details of Porter's loss of the USS Essex in 1814. This edition also includes an expanded preface as well as folding maps and notes and illustrations on the Galapagos Islands.
