Description:
Chatto & Windus. London. 1888. FIRST EDITION. 3 Volumes. 8vo. (7.5 x 5 inches). Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper of volume I, "A. P. Watt. From the Author". Original brown cloth blocked in metallic blue in a geometric pattern to the spines and front boards. The spines are lettered in gilt. Floral patterned endpapers. Spines rolled a little, some light spotting to endpapers and title pages but generally a clean, tight and bright copy. Overall a better than very good set. Alexander Pollock Watt (1838–1914) was the first successful British literary agent. His agency, started in 1875, is still active today and is, in fact, the longest-established literary agency in the world. He acted as Besant's agent, and also his literary executor.

Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans. London. 1846. FIRST EDITION. 2 VOLUMES. 8vo. (9.1 x 6 inches). 19 lithographic portraits, printed on India paper and mounted. Publisher's forest green fine combed cloth, title gilt to spines, blind panelling and central lozenge to the boards, mid-cream surface-paper endpapers. Very slightly rubbed, some off-setting from the plates, but overall a superb set in the original cloth. A remarkably well-preserved set of this highly desirable work. ----- Perhaps the key source for political and diplomatic background to the First Afghan War. Mohan Lal was "Bokhara" Burnes's most important intelligence operative, travelling extensively in Persia and Afghanistan and running a string of agents for the British. In 1841, as the situation in Kabul became critical, Lal tried to warn Burnes of the fact that he was the focus of rising discontent, but the Englishman foolishly believed that he would be able to talk his way out of the situation. Lal escaped the ensuing bloodbath, continuing to supply information from the Afghan capital. In 1844 he visited Scotland to return some papers to the Burnes family, the Montrose Review describing him then in glowing, if condescending, terms; "He is a very handsome man, of 28 years; and, when arrayed in the costly and gorgeous costume of his country, affords a favourable specimen of the Asiatic. But this is the least of his merits: his countenance beams with intelligence, and his intercourse with Europeans has enabled him to adapt himself, with perfect tact, to all their habits and modes of thinking, so that he can sustain with ease and propriety his part in any general conversation. We understand he has been urgently recalled to London â¦" He remained in London for some time, the present work being written there and dedicated with permission to Queen Victoria, but he never received the recognition from the British government that he felt he deserved. As a result of his service in Muslim countries, he had been excommunicated by the Kashmiri Pandit community, eventually converting to Islam, he died an isolated and embittered man in Delhi in 1877.

Description:
The Modern Press. 1886. First separate issue, larger untrimmed variant, inscribed by the author. Originally printed in the April 1885-March 1886 issues of "To-Day", this first edition was printed from the corrected and revised stereos of the original setting for the journal. This is the larger, variant issue, with the preliminary blank leaf bound at the beginning. Shaw explains the variant this way: "The size of the bigger copies is due to the fact that they reproduced not only the type but the format of To-day. But the booksellers objected that in this form it occupied too much room to be displayed on their stalls and counters. It was probably cut down as far as the margins would allow to meet this objection" (Laurence). Inscribed by Shaw, "This is the first Issue, which was so tall that the booksellers refused to exhibit it on their counters, as it took too much room. So it had to be cut down. G. Bernard Shaw 26/7/30." . ---- Housed in a green cloth covered chemise and quarter green morocco slip…

"The struggle of man against power is the struggle of memory against forgetting."Scars and bruises may fade, but we must remember what caused them. The purpose of《Wounds of Hong Kong》is to record police brutality. All 24 interviewees have sacrificed in their own ways during the Anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill Movement. Among the thousands wounded, they are only a few. I would like to sincerely thank them for sharing their experience, insights, and feelings to me. I remember at the beginning of the resistance outbreak in June of 2019. As a photographer/journalist, I felt unsure. Protesters all covered their faces with masks, so how could I tell their stories? How can I search their ethos beneath the masks? However, my worry was quickly swept away as I realized that they weren't the only ones…

Description:
This book is in good condition. There is a lot of wear on the front, back, spine and edges of the cover boards. There is also a substantial amount of staining on the cover boards. The pages are yellowed and tanned. There are also markings throughout the book. "The roots of this book reach back to the early 1950s in Paris, where I began my professional career as a journalist. France, supported by the United States, was then fighting to retain its hold in Indochina against the Vietminh, the Communist-led nationalist movement there. As I reported on the French end of the war, I soon became acquainted with the names and places in Vietnam from a distance, But I scarcely imagined that they were to be part of my own experience. Then, in 1959, I was assigned to cover eastern Asia; the region that included Vietnam became my beat for more than two decades. I visited Vietnam most recently in 1981 for seven weeks, the longest permitted an American correspondent since the Communists gained control of the entire…
