About This Item
New York: Lincoln Historical Society, 1909. Book. Near Fine. Cloth. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 4 Volumes. Volumes 2,3, and 4 indicate 1908 and Volume 1 is 1909. All bound alike in deep maroon, embossed cloth with gilted facsimile signature of Lincoln on front board and gilted tiles to the spine. These are NEAR FINE. Exteriors are rich and clean with very modest sunning to the spines. Minimal edge wear to tips. TEG. Insides are unmarked, crisp, and tightly bound. Minimal/ even toning throughout text blocks. Volumes 1, 2, and 3, have significant toning on FEPs due to laid in newspaper articles, still there. In Volume 1 is an article from the Minneapolis Tribune from February 12, 1920, celebrating Lincoln's 111th anniversary of his birth-- with reprints of the Gettysburg Address and Lincoln's Compassion, as well as the poem, "Lincoln, the Man of the People", by Edwin Markham. In Volume 2 is a New York Times Book Review from October 5, 1952 of Stefan Lorant's " Lincoln : A Picture Story of His Life". In Volume 3, there are two items laid in-- the first is a book review of the same book from the New York Times dated September 28, 1953 with a picture of the cover and pictures of the contents. The second item is an article from the Minneapolis Sunday Tribune of February 14, 1954-- a Carl Sandburg's unpublished original foreword to "Abraham Lincoln: The Prairie Years", printed here for the first time", with pictures of Lincoln at ages 37, 48, 53, and 55. Frontispieces with tissue guards are all present and fine. This combination of the 4 Volumes and these archival materials are RARE indeed..
