Boston: James H. West Co., 1900. First Edition. Good +/No DJ. 12mo = 7-9". This collection of loyal verse made for The New England Anti-Imperialist League. "The Anti-Imperialist League was formed in June 1898 to oppose the war of the U.S. with Spain over Cuba's fight for independence from Spanish rule as well as the desire of the U.S. to annex the Phillipine Islands & Puerto Rico. Some of the most famous members included Jane Addams, Andrew Carnegie, Mark Twain, and Mary Emma Byrd." (Swarthmore College Peace Collections). Included in this volume of poetry are several poems by William Lloyd Garrison, Jr. - the son of William Lloyd Garrison and was "a prominent advocate of the single tax, free trade, woman's suffrage, and of the repeal of the Chinese Exclusion Act." (Wikipedia) Included in this volume is a typed letter to the previous owner of the text a Mr. Lawrence Moffatt, the note states "Dear Sir: Accept my thanks for your kind word. I do not desire to lash Senator Hoar in a cruel spirit, but hoped to recall him to his better self. His conscience is a troublesome companion and we will leave his punishment to that. Sincerely yours, William Lloyd Garrison, dated Boston July 14, 1900." Green cloth covers with gilt lettering on front & spine. Top/bottom of spine and corners are bumped and worn. Inside of front cover are previous owner's names in ink. Opposite front cover the above mentioned letter has been glued onto front endpaper. Also contains a poem from the Newspaper entitled "A Victorious Ode - with apologies to R. Kipling." no author but someone wrote in pencil Pittsfield Sun, October 18, 1900. Front hinge is somewhat loose & cracked but contents of book are in very nice condition. Front illustration opposite of title page has photograph of soldiers standing over a mass grave - please note the palm trees in background of photo.
