THE LIBERATOR

by Liberator

  • Used
New York: Published by Liberator Publishing Co, 1918. I:10. (Whole number 10). Quarto. Pictorial wrapper by Maurice Sterne. Inevitable uniform tanning and fragility to the text block, top fore-corner of rear wrapper creased, small ink name stamp in a few margins, but an unusually good copy. Edited initially by Max and Crystal Eastman and Floyd Dell, and further on by Robert Minor, et al, with distinguished art and advisory editors. This number includes contributions by Art Young, Gropper, Sandburg, John Reed, R. Baldwin, Deutsch, Eastman, Robinson, et al. Published monthly from March 1918 through October 1924, LIBERATOR was the direct successor to THE MASSES, maintained in much the same spirit, but with a sharpening of concerns based on refinements in Marxist principles and practice, most notably in light of developments in Russia. GOLDWATER 137. HOFFMAN, et al, p.254.

We have 7 copies available starting at £43.82.

Description:
Small Octavo (7 7/8 x 5 1/2 inches; 202 x 137 mm), viii, 9-192 pages, in publisher's original gray cloth, with a printed dust jacket.
An important compilation of papers and proceedings at the historic first Writers' Congress of 1935. Authors included Malcolm Cowley, John Dos Passos, Louis Aragon, Waldo Frank, Granville Hicks, and Langston Hughes, among many others. Much of the discussion dealt with proletarian literature; the role of the writer in the Soviet Union, and the fight against Fascism. These were all left-wing writers, many of them associated with the Communist Party; the party's publishing arm issued this edition.
Given the close association of the congress with the Communist Party, it's not surprising to find CPUSA chief Earl Browder turning up in the proceedings. And Alexander Trachtenberg, who ran the party's International Publishers, gave an interesting talk on publishing revolutionary writers. Scarce in commerce.
CONDITION: Some sunning and soiling to boards, top edge dusty.… Read More

[SLAVERY & ABOLITION] The Liberator Extra: Our Foreign Relations, featuring a printing of Charles Sumner's 1863 speech. Boston, 10 September 1863. 4 pages. 21" x 16." The Liberator ran between 1831 and 1865 with the purpose of spreading anti-slavery sentiment and propagating the abolitionist cause. It was the most widely circulated liberationist newspaper during the Civil War and antebellum period. Famously, The Liberator denounced the Constitution, a controversial decision which resulted in an eventual split between Frederick Douglass and the newspaper's white founder William Lloyd Garrison. Reprinted in this particular issue is Senator Charles Sumner's speech, which was given at the Cooper Institute in New York City. In it, Sumner addresses the impending foreign relations crisis and denounces any new power with slavery as its cornerstone. He states: "The mistaken sympathy for which Foreign powers now bestow upon slavery...under the plausible name of neutrality... will be worse for them than us. For… Read More

Description:
1970 Guardian first American editions. Credited to author Baik Bong, the books are thought to be collectively written by the Chinese and North Korean governments.
First published in the Korean language in 1968 and 1969. The English language translations were first published in 1969 and 1970, in Japan, under the Miraisha imprint.
The three books offered in this listing are first American editions, with US copyrights and Library of Congress catalog numbers. Kim's three volume biography was published and distributed worldwide under various imprints and languages, including French, Italian, Spanish, and Serbian. Presumably, this worldwide distribution was undertaken in support of "exporting revolution", a priority of the Chinese government in the 1960's and 1970's.
Condition of the three books and dust jackets is Very Good Plus. The books have sound bindings, complete and unmarked inside pages. The dust jackets show only light shelf wear, are not price clipped, and are protected in new mylar covers.
