George Catlin was an American traveler and artist known for his perspective and understanding of Native Americans and the American West. He wrote essays and letters on the life and culture of Plains Indians such as Sioux and Iowa tribes.
Originally published in 1841, George Catlin's 'Letters and Notes on American Indians' covers the lives, customs, hunting cultures, and societies of Plains Indians, written while he was living among the various tribes. This 1844 edition features 400 hundred in-text and full-page engravings of Indian battles, chiefs, expeditions to the American West, and homes and villages. These illustrations were published as a collection, following the success and popularity of this work. It also includes vocabulary of Mandan, Blackfoot, Riccaree, Sioux, and Tuscarora Indians.
