Raised bands to spines with two maroon leather labels and gilt titles to each volume. Gilt to top edge. Also includes substantial essay, 38pp., on Ferrier, and Ferrier's Recollections of visits to Ashestiel and Abbotsford (home of Sir Walter Scott). A note on the text: "Miss Ferrier's novels have, since their first appearance, suffered curtailment in all subsequent editions. The present edition is the first reprint since from the original editions, and contains the whole of the omissions in other reprints." attributed to GB, New Burlington Street, presumably George Bentley son of the publishing founder, and subsequent partner. Includes Venetia, Coningsby, Edymion, Lothair, The Young Duke and Count Alarcos, Vivian Grey, Tancred, Sybil, Henrietta Temple, Contarini Fleming and the Rise of Iskander, and Alroy. Light brown cloth with gilt and black titles and decorations to spines, and dark blue and gilt cartouche to the front with gilt and blue border, and further gilt boarder to the edges of the front board. Each page has a red border line around the text. Title pages each with a different engraving showing an aspect of Disraeli's county house, Hughenden Manor, the lake, the terrace, the study, etc. Edward Buckton Lamb had done the remodelling of the house for Disraeli and his family. Very clean. Cloth is rather softened and a little worn to spine ends, some corners are slightly bumped. Some rubbing to corners. Just a little faded to spines. Text is clean. Bindings are sound. Rare original poetry book with cloth covered boards, copyright 1880 by J. W. Shoemaker & Co. This edition published in 1906 by the Penn Publishing company, Philadelphia. From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns. Light rubbing and bumps to outside spine edges. Back cover and interior cloth covered board has a stain at top. Original owner's name and address from 1908, but no other writing or marks. First 2 pages have a stain at top, but text of 192 pages of poetry and recitations is totally clean with light tanning of pages.
