About This Item

Second edition 1780, greatly improved and enlarged, Volume 6 only. Thick 4to, approximately 275 x 210 mm, 11 x 8¼ inches, 18 engraved plates, 1 folding table. Pages: [1], 4007-4877, [1], including a chapter of 10 pages on Legerdemain with 2 copper engraved plates, 1 hand coloured which is slightly smaller than should be and maybe from another edition, text printed in 2 columns, bound in full antique leather (sheep), contrasting gilt lettered morocco labels, gilt decoration to spine. Binding slightly rubbed and scuffed with some light staining, corners worn at tips with board just showing, endpapers slightly marked, 2 small patches of sealing wax to rear endpaper, small pale stain affecting endpapers front and rear. The coloured legerdemain plate has pale stain to top and bottom margin, not affecting image, occasional small spot or stain, 1 small closed tear to margin, paper fault not affecting text. otherwise a very good copy in contemporary binding. See: Toole Stott, A Bibliography of English Conjuring 1581-1876, Volume I, page 96, No. 253 which lists the 1810 edition only. Tricks with cards and sleight of hand of various sorts, some with quite complicated looking apparatus. The second edition of The Encyclopaedia Britannica was published in 10 volumes from 1778-83.
